Whenever we go in to make a new album we never know how it's gonna be received by those who spend most of their time listening to and judging such things. We're humbled by the positive reception for our new record so far and this review from Spanish outlet Dirty Rock Magazine makes all the hours we spent toiling away on High on the Low Brow totally worthy.

There are bands that don't see rock as an exercise in nostalgia, but as a living language that continues to embrace new combinations. That's where Datura4 maintains its appeal. Far from chasing trends or masking their sound with contemporary production, the Australian group proves once again in High On The Low Brow that boogie, electric blues, and psychedelia can still sound fresh when backed by truly great songs.

"While I'm listening to the newest album from Datura4, I can easily imagine it's 1972. High on the Low Brow would fit comfortably in a set that included ZZ Top, Cactus, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin of that time."

"Any discussion about Datura4 will focus on its frontman/founder Dom Mariani. Although not a world-renowned, or even familiar, name to all but the most dedicated rock fan, Mariani is an award-winning icon of the Australian roots music scene. He has led, or been involved with, a dizzying array of bands over a career extending back to the early 80s."

Over a decade in, the legendary Dom Mariani is still as invested in his stoner rock beast as ever. Fans of his prolific power pop work may still be scratching their heads, but there’s always been more to Datura4 than just riffs. Australia has long had its own hard rockin’ blues boogie tradition, which is the music that inspired Mariani to get into the game, and he always sounds like he’s having a blast playing this noise.

West Australian boogie masters DATURA4 return with their highly anticipated fifth album, “Neanderthal Jam”. Fronted by Dom Mariani of legendary Oz garage rockers The Stems, Neanderthal Jam is eleven new tracks of psychedelicised blues and full-tilt heavy rock that were jammed out and recorded at their favourite south-west farmhouse studio during the early months of 2021.

Is it third time lucky for Datura4, the blues-psych-boogie outfit from West Australia? It could well be especially if it's got anything to do with Dom Mariani, a chap whom I first encountered way back in the 1980s in the Stems. With him at the helm and a change of direction it's got a very good chance. It is not that anything that came before was not good enough.
